Summer Series Results from Self's Farm
December 1, 1999
Results from courses: One   Two   Three   Four  Score

WOW, another great day. Great to see you all there. This map is a bit different from all the rest - no roads on it at all - so it was a bit more of a challenge and you all seemed to cope well. Well done. Many thanks to Tom Davies who set the courses for today and spent the afternoon working with us to make the whole thing go smoothly.

The cattle are quite fun - did you find that? We got all the controls out and then noticed a couple missing, one was without its cardboard flag and the other was knocked over and shifted. When being replaced it was found to be covered in slobber but very clean!!!!

The ground was a bit rough but that adds to the challenge. Sorry Mervyn that you hurt your leg, hope it recovers quickly.

A very special thank you to Mr John Self for the use of the farm. It is wonderful to have a change from the parks. Mr Self especially mowed the parking area for us - the previous week that whole area had been knee deep in grass.

It was great to have two scout groups (St Georges and Papatoetoe North) join us and the boys had great fun. Really good to see that some boys did two courses.

Next week the orienteering is on One Tree Hill starting from the archery car park. Remember we now move to THURSDAY nights (the 9th). There is a special event along with the usual courses and all this has been prepared by a younger club member, Douglas Kwan. The special event is called a micrO. This is a very short event on a large scale map used frequently as a training exercise but a great fun event for competitor and spectator alike. The micrO on the 9th of December will be on a clover leaf shaped course of about 1 to 1.5kms on a map with a 1:2500 scale. The start will be very close to the registration area. We wish the event to be run in groups of 4 as that adds to the competitive nature of the event. All 4 start together and do the same controls but in a different order. It is designed for experienced orienteers but anyone can give it a go. The controls are set at course 1 & 2 level but we welcome those who are doing course 3 to have a go too. It's great fun to watch too as the runners keep coming back near the start and going away again - you can cheer your friends on. There is no extra cost for this event and you can do an ordinary course as well. Watch for the special entry form for the micrO at the event. (We'd like to have some idea of how micrO maps to prepare - if you are likely to have a go could you please reply to this email telling us - you are not committed!)

The last night before Christmas will be held on the Mt Eden map starting from Melville Park, by the Auckland Teacher College. This is also a Thursday night event (16th).
