Summer Series Results from Lloyd Elsmore
March 7, 2002
Results from courses: One  Two  Three  Four

Are you worried about your summer? It is coming to an end! The last of the Summer Series is next week. And just after the weather has settle down too!! Lets make the final night on One Tree Hill a boomer. For those feeling they haven’t been challenged enough lately, we will have a contours only course available to help along the training for the Nationals. It is also the second of the Secondary Schools events, so it should be a lively night.

Thank you to Brian Johnston for a fine set of courses tonight, and to Mark Roberts for taking over most of the event organization for us. As you may have noticed, Alistair could not be there tonight, so a very big thank you to all the people who lent a helping hand.

There were many very positive comments tonight about the delights of Lloyd Elsmore Park. It is a couple of years since we have used it and it has developed considerably in that time with many interesting parts tucked away which came as quite a surprise to most competitors. We were delighted, too, at how many people from the area turned up to participate tonight – this is the purpose of moving to a different area each week, to give people a chance to ‘give it a go’ close to home. Thank you all for coming along and I do hope we will see you again at some of our other events.

There has been a steady string of overseas orienteers joining us at our Summer Series events this year – fellow orienteers from Switzerland, Sweden, Germany, Australia and tonight Austria. We do hope you enjoy your stay in New Zealand.

Lost property left at tonight’s event – a pair of sun glasses in a sachet. Please get in touch with us or claim them at One Tree Hill.

With the Summer Series almost over the Sunday events are now underway. This weekend many of us will be heading down to Taupo to the night relays – something looked forward to from one year to the next. Next weekend (17th March) sees the first of the Score Series out in the forest. Sunday 17th event is at Weiti, on the east coast, just north of Long Bay. This would be a great event to come out to, following on from the Summer Series. You get a map a bit like you do at the Summer Series, with all the controls marked on it, and are given 1 hour to head off and visit as many controls as you can.  The controls are of differing value and there is quite an art in working out which ones to head for and in what order. There is one mass start so everyone gets back at once to allow for a pleasant time chatting and eating sausages off the barbeque, to say nothing of the wonderful spot prizes on offer. It also gives a great opportunity for newer orienteers to go back out into the forest with one of the many elites present to get a few first hand tips about the finer points of the sport. Make sure you mark the morning of the 17th March on your calendar now!
