That was a really hot evening for running up and down those hills (mountains!). Those of you who thought it too hot, I can assure you it was much more pleasant than on Sunday when we did the control checking - we were in the clouds on Mt Hobson! Thank you very much to Tim Renton and Dougal Harding for help with the course setting. There was a challenge there for everyone. Some interesting route choice was being discussed as was the merits (and legality) of crossing high fences (some - but not all - course 1 competitors cut the length of their courses by going over a high wire fence!!). There were some really close times on course two night - one less than optimal route choice could have cost you quite a few places!

We also thank Dilworth School for the use of their grounds and opening important gates, thanks also to Diocesan Girls High, the trotting club at Alexandra Park and the Auckland Showgrounds for use of their grounds. We had excellent cooperation in having gates opened for us.

Welcome to the newcomers. There were a few of you tonight and it was great to have you along and showing such enthusiasm.

Lots mentioned they'd never been on these volcanic cones before (especially on Mt St John). We also heard that some didn't stay long enough to enjoy the great views and the quiet ambience of the crater. How about going back again with some more time and enjoying one of the great assets of our city.

These are all fairly easy courses but in areas new to us so how about giving them a go. There are 3 more events in March on the first 3 Wednesdays (details next week). Especially made not to clash with the Summer Series. For more info contact Bob Hattie (299 6394) or John Robinson (837 4610). They'd love to hear from you.

Next week we are on the Self's Farm map and this area is accessed from Tidal Rd, Papatoetoe. Tidal Road runs from Massey Rd through to Portage Rd by Aorere College. This is a cattle farm right on an estuary up from the Manukau Harbour and just across the water from the airport. The area must have been a volcanic cone as it has areas of volcanic rock and it has a rim with a lake in the middle. We will hope for an evening like tonight - we were out there doing some checking last night and it was really beautiful - flocks of birds everywhere, a wonderful sunset and the lake with its ducks looking superb. This is also a Wednesday event - on Wednesday the 21st February.

The week after next we are back to an old faithful map - Auckland Domain. This is the first of the Thursday events - 1st March.

Lost property this week - a yellow drink bottle - will be at the event next week.
