Another great day for orienteering. Pity it was the last of this Summer Series but with loosing daylight saving this weekend it would be impossible to hold any more evening events. As it was we had to use torches to find the controls at collection time last night. Good job we had practiced at the night O in Taupo at the weekend! We hope you all enjoyed the season and will be back for more in October.
This Sunday (18th March) is the second of the OY events. The venue is Deaks Head map in Woodhill forest, entry via Rimmer Rd off State Highway 16 (head out to the end of the NW motorway and then head for Helensville). There will be the usual orienteering road signs from SH16. Again we have to travel over Maori land to reach this map so there will be a $5.00 road charge collected at the gate. For first time forest orienteers there will be a special price on Sunday - the same as the Summer Series charges. Make yourself known at the campermatic (the same one you are used to!!) as a Summer Series orienteer venturing out to the forest. There are courses suitable for all levels of experience and fitness, including a longer, simple orienteering course for those who want to have a longer run but who as yet do not have enough orienteering experience to tackle the longer harder courses. There will also be a string course to entertain the younger children from toddlers up!
Rob Garden has written some notes to help “Newcomers to O’ing in the forest” so we’ve put these on the Auckland website for your interest. Go to Next Sunday (25th of March) there is a promotion event on the Beautiful Hills map. This event is specially put on to introduce people to forest orienteering with lots of experienced orienteers on hand to give any help they can. Someone will even take you around one of the courses if you wish. This map is reached by entering Woodhill Forest at the Forest Headquarters entry. This is on State Highway 16 about 5-10 minutes drive north of Waimauku. The courses are down the bottom of the map so you will have to drive through the manned gate to get to the start/finish area. From the turn off the main road just keep going straight ahead to the manned gate. There are courses for all levels:- white (like summer series course 4), yellow (like summer series course 3), orange (like the summer series courses 1 & 2 easier controls) and two red courses (like summer series courses 1 and 2 and often harder). There is also a long adventure course of about 6-7 km and of a yellow standard. This is also a secondary schools event so the forest will be busy. The lower courses have deliberately been made easy as an encouraging start to those who haven't visited the forest before. There are special reduced charges for those who are new to forest orienteering. For the new orienteers the costs are the same as the summer series, $5 for adults, $4 for juniors and $14 for a family. Sorry, other orienteers have to pay $8 for adults, $4.50 for juniors and a $20.50 for a family.
Club members, there is an evening training session on Wednesday the 21st concentrating on route choice. This will be held at the AUT and will start at 7:30pm. Darren Ashmore will lead the discussions. This is a great opportunity so pencil in the date and come along. Further details from Mark Roberts at 5219535 or nmr@iprolink.co.nz
