The Summer Series of orienteering has come to a close. It was a great last night, a wonderful evening to finish on. However, it is clear that daylight saving is about to go this weekend as it is getting dark quickly and we have trouble collecting all the controls in in the dark. Thank you to David Stewart for this evenings courses- he wasn't in one of his rather cruel moods - some of you might have noticed!!
We had two controls shifted during the event, we hope that no one was affected by this. We have been very lucky right through the series that so few controls have been moved and none have been lost yet. We still have to go out and find the missing two tomorrow.
This is the last email for a while that those on our Summer Series only list will get. If you stop getting emails but want to hear about orienteering during the winter write back and let us know and we'll put you on the winter event list.
Time for a holiday for the organisers. We are off to the SI on Saturday to kayak and walk in the Abel Tasman Park and then on the following weekend we'll get two days of orienteering at the South Island champs. What a way to have a rest from orienteering! (David has to stay home to look after the dog.)
We want to thank Mark Lawson and Douglas Kwan for their wonderful help during the season. Mark has, without fail, collected in all the difficult controls every night - and latterly had to use a torch to do so. Also congratulation to Mark on his selection to the New Zealand Orienteering team to compete in the World Cup event to be held in Australia at Easter. Very well done Mark.
Also thanks to the many others who have helped out through out the season. Many have pitched in when needed and given valuable help. Special mention to Darren Ashmore for conducting the coaching, Mark Roberts for his wonderful help with mapping and the "Tautari Team" who did such a wonderful job in distributing flyers all over town and giving so many the information that our event was on. We have had various course setters over the season, some new to this job and others who haven't done much; we thank them all very much for their efforts. We do appreciate having a bit of a break and we know how much time you put into preparing your courses.
To the non club-members, if you have enjoyed orienteering in the parks you might like to think of orienteering in the forest. If you plan to try this we look forward to seeing you again shortly and for those who have other activities during the winter we look forward to seeing you during the next summer series.
Good luck to those running in the Katoa Po (night O relays) at Taupo this weekend. Have a fun night.
The next event near Auckland is OY2 (Orienteer of the Year) to be held on the Hurawai map. This is near the South Waikato Heads on the 26th March. Crose the river at Tuakau, turn right off the bridge and drive by the river to near the heads. Then it is about 6kms to the map. A fascinating area. Then on the 2nd of April there is OY3 to be held on the map called Turkey Ridge. Enter Woodhill forest off State Highway 16 at Rimmers road (a couple of kilometres short of the Parakai-Helensville round-a-bout). You'll see signs and then have to enter through a manned gate (cost $5 to go through as we have to drive on to Maori land). The first of the autumn series is on the 16th of April on the map called Deaks Head. This woodhill map is just a bit north of Turkey Ridge and so you enter the forest by the same route. Use the web address at the bottom of this message to find the program to keep up to date. Everyone is welcome at all these event. Never hesitate to ask for help. The Nationals this year are being held in the Wairarapa at Easter. This is a pre-entry event for all club members. Entries close at the end of this month. Hurry and join up and enter and taste some top orienteering. There are 12 courses available and 49 grades so there is something to suit all speeds and ability.
