Despite the threat of rain it never came and we had a great evening. The numbers were really up – helped lots by all the guide and scout groups. Western Springs is one of our favourite maps, especially because of the beautiful but very tricky area near the start finish area. We hope you enjoyed being there as much as the organisers enjoyed being there to plan the courses. A very big thank you to Pete Swanson for his efforts to get good courses. He achieved most interesting route choice – the main objective of the Summer Series course setters. You may know that most Wellingtonians couldn’t get to work yesterday because of the weather, Pete did though and by flying from Auckland – the roughest flight he’s ever had!!!
***SATURDAY – NIGHT orienteering. ***
This Saturday evening there is night orienteering at Ambury Park – come
off the SW motorway at the first exit across the Manukau Harbour bridge and then
follow the signs to the event. You will need a COMPASS and a TORCH. As different
from night orienteering on One Tree Hill there is little contour and so a
compass is much more important and it can be darker being a bit further out of
the city. We can lend you a compass if you don’t have one. Starts are from
8:30pm for course 3 and 9pm for courses 1 & 2. Remember you can camp the night
too – Ring the ARC on 3662000 (option 2) to organise this. $5/adult and $2 for
18 and under (- $6 if you arrange it with the ranger at the park on the night).
ROGAINE
On 6/7 March 2004, the Green Coast 2004 NZ Rogaining Championships will be held
at Wairamarama, near Port Waikato, Auckland South. There will be approximately
70 checkpoints spread across 160 square kilometres. Teams of between 2-5
persons will have 24 hours (with separate 16-hour and 6-hour options also
available) to navigate on foot to as many checkpoints as possible. You don’t
have to keep going for all that time to compete, however. Everyone is welcome to
come along and take part, coming back whenever you have had enough – it is not
only for the guns – those doing it somewhat less competitively are also
encouraged to come along and join in the fun. Registration for the event is now
open. Info sheet and entry form available at http://auckoc.tripod.com and at
each of the Summer Series events. Entries close on March 1.

Advance notice
Counties Manukau will be offering a series of promotional events from
March till May, with the first on March 7 at Totara Park – collect a programme
from the stand at the Summer Series or watch for more information in future
emails.
Next week’s Summer Series is on 25th February - the first of the WEDNESDAY events for 2004 on Craigavon near Blockhouse Bay. The event centre will be off Connaught St which goes off Portage Rd. This is a delightful bit of coast that you may never have been to previously.
We have results from three events. There are tonight’s results below and also results from the promotional event held on Pot Luck in Woodhill Forest last Sunday (15th) and also results from the night event held last Thursday(12th) evening. We were sent an informative commentary by the controller for the event at Pot Luck but, very unfortunately, we don’t have that available to send out now. We’ll include John Powell’s comments in next weeks email.
The night orienteering event on One Tree Hill was a great success. The rain that threatened never eventuated and the evening was just great. It was most exciting watching the little white lights bobbing about all over the hill. Because of the low cloud there was lots of reflected light and the powerful headlamps owned by some were not essential. Quite a few found running with no light the best way to travel – for some of their course. There were some great times showing that night orienteering can be as simple as daylight orienteering. There was a really exciting atmosphere as everyone prepared to head out into the dark and then reappeared to relate their experiences. If you did not make it to this event, do try to come along this Saturday night to Ambury Park. This will be our last night event in the Summer Series, and for the club members who will be heading off in mid March to the annual night relay champs in Taupo, a great opportunity to get in some practice.
If you have been thinking you would join a club but have just not got around to it then now is a great time to join the Auckland club as we are offering free running at the rest of the Summer Seies (including the night event) if you join up before the end of the season ($65 adults, $40 students, $90 family)
