Summer Series Results from One Tree Hill

That was a great evening to see out the Summer Series for this season. For those with a bit of experience it was valuable for the setters to get you to use a contours only map. We all hope you enjoyed the experience and gained a little more O skill too. (We apologise that the results may be a bit confused as to whether you did the course on the contours only map or used the colour map. We did not make the names of the courses clear enough – Sorry).

It has been just great to see the spread of ages all out enjoying the evenings – from really young ones with parents and grandparents (some of these youngsters are now even venturing around on their own – shows great independence and self confidence), through to some quite senior citizens who have taken on the slopes of our various volcanic cones with a vengeance – inspiring to see.

Tonight also saw the end of the first of the Secondary Schools series, with some very tight finishes. Each week has seen more schools and their representatives joining in – it looks like the forest series will be even more keenly contested. There was a particularly close finish on the Standard Boys course tonight, with Adam Phipps (AGS) and Toby Scott (Glendowie College) going into tonight neck and neck. Toby just pipped Adam by a few seconds tonight – there will be some hard fought competition over the next few months.

This event was set by Melvina Wise and controlled by Mark Roberts. They did a wonderful job of setting interesting and challenging courses. Thank you very much you two for your help with this event.

Now is the time – perhaps we should have done this earlier – to thank all those who helped run this very successful summer series. Many AOC members put in lots of time in various aspects of the series and made it run very smoothly. We managed to run 18 events over this summer – an all time record for the Club. An especially big thank you to those who are not AOC members for their help, it was just wonderful to have you volunteer to do the jobs you did. It might have seemed a small contribution but to us who would have had to add that on to a pile of things to do, it was a major help.

Summer Series orienteering is over for now but there is lots of orienteering coming up. This Saturday there is mountain bike orienteering and on Sunday there is foot orienteering. Come and try using the skills you got in the Summer Series in the forest. It is not far to travel either. We are using a map at Weiti, only 45 minutes from the centre of Auckland. Head north on the northern motorway and come off at Greville Rd and the continue north on East Coast Rd. There will be signs to tell you when to turn right to the map. This is a score event where everyone starts together – the start is at 11am – but you need to be there at least at 10:20 to get registered and to the start by 10:45 for the briefing. This event is for everyone – come and give a real fun orienteering event a go. Fees: $10 adults, $7 juniors.

The following Sunday (28TH) there is an event south of the city. The map is Harkers Reserve and this is just across the Waikato River at Tuakau. Cross the bridge here and signs will take you a fairly short distance up the hill to the event. Start times are between 10am and noon. On the 4th of April there is an event at Muriwai. Come to Muriwai beach and follow the signs along the road heading north past the golf course. Start time are again 10am to noon. This is a great place for a picnic afterwards too. There will be plenty of help available for newcomers to the forest. $10 adults, $5 juniors (but for O club members it is $8 and $4).

And then to the Nationals!! (entries due in today)

Further on, on the 9th of May there is the famous Woodhill Forest Fun Run - organised by the National Orienteering Squad as a fund raiser for sending the NZ Orienteering team to international events. There is a fun run and walk (both 5 and 10kms) and mountain biking (10 and 21km) and you can do more than one for your entry fee. See www.forestrun.co.nz for details and entry form.
