Setter’s comments

 The setter’s aim was to create challenging courses for 1 and 2, and interesting courses for 3 and 4. This was pretty much achieved, and particular comments were heard supporting this from many orienteers - even one from an experienced AOC member who thought it was the hardest summer series event he had been to! Of note was the experience of 2 very experienced AOC and NWOC members who followed the order of the control descriptions on the side of the map thinking it was course 3, and failed to see the real course 3 written on the bottom! So as well as being a night of challenging courses, some of us made our own little challenges on top of what was set...as is often the case with this great sport of orienteering. Whilst all comments are taken on board, it is also worth noting that this year we have a greater variety of course setters, meaning that there will be a correspondingly greater variety of course styles and challenges - tonight being an example of that. We hope everyone got to travel to the top of Mt Eden - such an excellent night for it and worth all the effort just for the views. 

Controller’s comments

I would like to thank Peter for his course setting tonight. Peter pretty much had the right idea for the courses, but needed a bit of fine tuning. A last minute map change meant course 3 needed to be shorted a little bit. Apart from this it all went well. It looks like we just about sold out all the maps, a great turn out for a warm summers night. We had hoped to set a challenging course for competitors, particularly for courses 1 & 2. We did not want to run people up to the top and then down again. We opted for trying to run people along a slope. Based on feedback from competitors at the end it would seem that we achieved the desired level of challenge. Most comments were concerned with the use of man made objects. One control on courses 1 and 2 had a man made structure made of chicken netting. A great many people had problems with this control, most not enjoying the level of climb involved. The "embankment" area facing Mt Eden Road caused some frustration to competitors as well, this is a richly featured area for which some mapping inconsistency  appear due to the very small area it takes up on the map. One competitor was concerned about the use of a control site situated under a cliff for which the most likely approach was from above. On reflection this was not a good control site, if anyone had leaned over and had slipped, I may have been in the unenviable position of explaining my actions to the authorities. The lesson I have learnt from this will be applied to future events. Once again most people who went to Withiel Thomas Park enjoyed this area, but thought that control placement was a problem, in particular the Eastern most control. On a more positive note, every one who went to the Auckland College of Education liked the intricate navigation around the buildings. The only other "compliant" that I believe I should comment on, was the use of control descriptions and the listing of courses on the maps. This is a relatively new development for the summer series. It was introduced at last weeks event. This system means that we as organisers do not need to produce as many pieces of paper, as the maps are more self contained. Unfortunately not all competitors fully appreciated this development, with some running their courses in control number sequence. For those who did this on course 3, it added an extra Kilometre to the course, they believed they were running. I can only suggest that all competitors should have a good look at the map before they set of on their journey.

Next week we move to a WEDNESDAY night, 26th November, start at Mount Richmond, entering from Great Sth Rd, south of Silvia Rd in Penrose. There are major roadworks on the Great South Rd, Silvia Rd area but they will not affect our entrance to Mt Richmond. The longer course will travel to Hamlin’s Hill as well. For those of you who have not visited Mt Richmond before, it is a dear little volcano, somewhat flatter than Mt Eden!! A word of advise though – wear an old pair of socks as it is renowned for its biddy bids!
