There were lots of very positive comments about the lovely little park we were in today.  Many commented that they had never been there before. Pity our friend the rain was with us again. Does this mean we’ll get great fine days for all the events in the New Year? It is a pity that those who stayed in the park didn’t get to experience the lovely bush track and beach that we took course 1 out too. It was a very nice area and would have been even better if there had been no rain and the tide had been in.

Had a couple of hiccups today but hope you didn’t notice them. We arranged for the gate to the park to be opened at the time we arrived to set up but the message hadn’t got to the right person. It took about 3/4 hour of calls to get it opened – the City Council people, when we got to the right ones, were most co-operative. This meant it was all hands to the deck for the early arrivers. Thanks very much for your help. The other problem was Marcellin College and the use of their ground. We believed that we had permission to use the playing fields but not the buildings but when the head came over he said we shouldn’t have been on their grounds at all. This was why we were giving clear messages to everyone that  the school buildings were out of bounds.

When we first arrived at the park we were met by an agitated neighbour of the park who was very concerned that we did not walk across her property to access the park – it appears that rugby players do. We assured her that orienteers are very responsible people and that of course they would not go on to her private land – we put up some tape to encourage you to avoid the area of concern. Please do always remember that we are very dependent on land owners’ cooperation for our sport and so need to be careful in the extreme to ensure no one could be upset by our presence.

The first Summer Series event in the new year is on the Carrington map on Tuesday, 21st  January 2003 (this is the grounds of Unitec). We look forward to seeing you all there, well rested and ready for action!

On Saturday, 18th January there is the “Wild Turkey” half marathon – especially suited to orienteers. This event is advertised as Auckland’s toughest off-road adventure run – in the Waitakere Ranges. For full details see www.lacticturkey.co.nz.

We wish you all a really great Christmas and a New Year full of wonderful orienteering experiences.
