Summer Series Results from Self's Farm
February 19, 2003

Results from courses: One   Two   Three   Four

Self’s Farm is a delightful place to go and tonight was no exception. The rain for the day disappeared just before we arrived to set up and never came back. The sunset I said could be great, was. The cattle provided entertainment too. When I collected the controls at the end of the evening a few on them were rather sloppy but the cattle responsible, I’m sure they thought they were doing us a good turn by licking clean the paper flags. None were eaten tonight.

Thank you very much to Nicola Kinzett for tonight’s courses. Many, many hours were spent in the planning and preparation of this event. There are a lot of issues that need to be thought about on this map. A great set of courses ensued. Also our very sincere thanks to Mr John Self who has generously allowed us to use his property yet again. We very much appreciate his kindness.

Last week we asked for guesses as to the use the lake used to be put to. None were forthcoming but did you notice the lake colour was surprisingly close to that of your beer??

I hope that those of you who had controls out on the ‘island’ enjoyed the spot. This is the first time for many years that we have been able to visit there. When the area was first mapped for the Auckland relay champs many years ago we ventured on to this area but for many years the water level has been higher and you would have needed a swim to reach it. We were delighted to find that we could again join the shags in their nests out there this year.

Next week we are at the lovely Western Springs. While checking it out on Tuesday evening we found a great spot to view the elephants. Cattle this week, elephants next week. Also if you enjoyed the bird life tonight, just wait till next week – we could hardly move over the grass for birds of all descriptions last night, and at one stage I turned to speak to the person who had come up beside me to find it was a very large swan! The event is another Wednesday one, the 26th. We’re starting at the end of Stadium Rd. Stadium Rd is opposite the entrance to the motorway.

Remember the forest event this Sunday. Enter off State Highway 16 on Rimmer Road and continue on to the coast. There are 9 courses to choose from, the longest being 9.7km right down to a very easy 1.8km course. There will be a suitable course for everyone. First starts are from 10:00. As we are using the electronic timing you will not have a clipcard so you’ll have to carry the control description by some other means. Those who do not already have a system for doing this need to think about how they will cope. One suggestion is to put the description sheet in the map bag. If you don’t want to do this then a suitable container (a small plastic bag) with safety pin is advisable. Summer Series competitors – bring a compass if you have one – we will have a few that we can hire out.
