The weather sure makes a difference – to everyone. It makes it so much
more pleasant for you to run round the courses and it means we need lots
of maps and we got caught short tonight – not by too much but it is very
frustrating not to have clean new maps for everyone. However, with good
cooperation from early finishers we made sure everyone who wanted a map
got one. Thank you to those who handed over their map after their run.
Thanks very much to Scott Vennell who set the event today and did much
of the running round. There were lots of very complimentary remarks about
the courses and the map. Many knew there was something in behind those
trees but had never been in to see.
It was a night of car problems. Firstly we ran out of petrol on the
way to the event – luckily Scott was doing such a good job we hope you
didn’t notice any delays at the beginning. There was a flat battery and
a set of lost keys too. However, the lost keys were to a car that contained
the keys of two other cars, and the car with the lost keys had special
locks and so the final solution was, even after being opened by the AA,
had to be towed home to await a locksmith.
While putting out the road signs this evening a flash sports car drove
up and parked close by. The driver got out and walked over and asked what
I was doing, a rhetorical question because he then told me it was stupid
to be putting up direction signs for an ‘orienteering’ event. After a bit
more ridicule he got back into his car, did a U turn and sped away up the
road. It takes all sorts but I was surprised this fellow actually got out
of his car to make his joke.
A few course 1 and 2 orienteers tonight came back somewhat coated in
the remnants of what was once Lake Waiatarua - the lake is somewhat
stale now!! Scott had marked a nice dry crossing point for them but some
were going too fast to notice it on the ground or map – suspect the shower
was in order as soon as they got home!
With only 3 more events left before the end of the Summer Series season,
next week will be the last of the Park O sprints that many of out elites
have been running at great speed. We will make an effort to have this one
quite different from course 1 or 2 so it would be good if we could have
a good number for this last one – you can do your long course as well.
It is also the first of the Auckland Secondary Schools competitions so
if you are at a secondary school and have heard nothing then ask your sports
coordinator about it.
The North West club offers you a great weekend
of orienteering. Two day events and one night event on 2 & 3
March. Don't waste time travelling, join the fun and camp overnight,
next to the cabin at Slater Road.
Event 1 - Wounded Knee - 6 courses to choose
from. A chance to sharpen up your forest orienteering skills. Full body
cover recommended.
Starts from 3:00 - 4:30pm
Event fees: Senior $11; Junior/65+ $9; Family
$22 ++plus++ Carter Holt Harvey levy (CHH) of $3 per head
Directions - signposted from Parakai, drive 35
minutes north along South Head Road.
Event 2 - Slater Road Night O - courses for all
levels. Great training for those going to the Katoa Po relays or just lots
of fun.
Starts from 8:00pm. Don't forget to bring
your headlamps and torches, full body cover recommended.
Event fees - Senior $5; Junior/65+ $3; Family
$13. But if you are in for all three events then for this event the fee
is Senior $3; Junior/65+ $1; Family $7.
Directions - Access through 45 Slater Road. 25
minutes north of Parakai. For those camping overnight - toilets provided
otherwise be self sufficient.
Event 3 - Kaipara Knolls - 6 courses to choose
from. Another chance to practice before the Score series and
the Nationals.
Starts from 10am - 12 midday
Event fees - Senior $11; Junior/65+ $9;
Family $22 plus CHH $3 per head;
Directions - signposted from Parakai, drive 35
minutes north along South Head Road.
Total fees for the weekend if you are in for all
the events are Senior $25; Junior/+65 $19; Family $51 plus CHH fees of
$3/person per daylight event. (Junior is under 21).
The Summer Series next week is on the Unitec Campus at Carrington. Enter
off Carrington Rd, Mt Albert, through gate 3. This event is again on Wednesday
– the 27th Feb.
