Welcome to our home territory. We live only about 300 metres up the
road from the event centre so it was like having you all to our place.
We hope you enjoyed the area. Weren’t we lucky with the weather. Earlier
in the day I got soaked walking between one building and another and then
thought about putting out controls in the rain for very few people. However
it cleared up and lots of you came to enjoy the full tide and sunny skies.
Sorry to those on course one who had troubles with BD - top of cliff
- it wasn’t supposed to be hard it was really just the end of a leg with
a couple of route choices. Also sorry to those on course 3 who had to contend
with a broken control (XJ). I knew it was a bit rickkety but didn’t get
back to fix it. One or two of the controls on courses 1 & 2 moved a
bit during the evening too but not very far so I did find them in the dark
when collecting them in.
Courses 1 & 2 were a bit longer today mainly because there was lots
of street running. Don’t worry if you have noticed a trend, they probably
won’t ever be longer than this. Did those who didn’t do course 1 know that
the course 1 orienteers took 4 maps - no wonder they took so long with
all that map reading to do. (The maps all had different scales so that
caused some trouble.)
We’re very impressed with the enthusiasm of the Summer Series orienteers.
One competitor today cycled from Mt Eden, orienteered on course one, was
one of the later ones back and then jumped on her bike and peddled back
to Avondale. Well done Christina.
Last week a compass with whistle attached was handed in. If it is yours
please ask at the campermatic and we’ll be happy to return it.
Next week we are at One Tree Hill (with a small map correction to be
made). This has, traditionally, been one of our busiest nights so come
along and make a really great event with lots of atmosphere. This is a
Wednesday event so make sure you’ve the right day marked on your calendar.
This map is a super one with lots of interesting orienteering features
and lovely views if you get confused and need a stop. We’re hoping to have
a contours only course next week too - those who want this extra challenge
may like to bring their compass. (All the standard courses will be available
too.)
The week after is a day further on and out west - Blockhouse Bay Reserve
in Terry St.
