Summer Series Results from Mt St John
January 25, 2000

Results from courses: One   Two   Three   Four

Welcome back to orienteering in the year 2000. It was great to see so many keen to get back into our favourite sport. The weather didn't encourage us to get out but it was really nice, especially to the late starters. Being just that much cooler was welcomed by most too. We believe that some were so keen to get back into it that they turned up a week early! Sorry to the couple of folks who spent the evening waiting for the event to arrive on Mt St John - I have always said that if you can manage to orienteer to the start of the events then you are a long way to mastering the sport!!

Lisa Brooks did a great job setting, it was her first go. It was especially nice to get access to the new bits in the Racecourse and Show Grounds. We thank the staff in both places for their helpful support.

Over the Christmas time one of our junior orienteers did wonderfully in a competing sport, Amy Hodgson was selected and played for the Auckland under 17 cricket team. Her cricket reduces the amount of orienteering she can do unfortunately but we wish her well in her cricket career.

Also during the break Mark Lawson ran and finished 5th in the World Masters Orienteering Champs in the mens 35 year class. This is a wonderful effort against very classy competition. Lisa and Geoff Mead, in a very grueling 24 hour event, won the veteran mixed category at the World Rogaine championships held near Hamner Springs a couple of weeks ago.

The Kaweka Challenge (a tough mountain marathon) is being held on the weekend of the 19-20 February. Royce Mills would like a ride to this event. If anyone has a spare seat could they call Bert Chapman on 8465083 as Royce hasn't returned to Auckland yet. Thanks.

Next week the orienteering is out east. We start in Lloyd Elsmore Park, signposted from Pakuranga Drive. There will be a street section on the longer courses - just to keep you out of mischief. Remember this is a Tuesday event. On the 1st of February, the day after the holiday Monday. - It will seem like a Monday event so don't get fooled.

The following week the event is on a map new to the summer series - Ambury Park in Mangere. Those who like long events will get some Mangere Mountain too. There is a memory course also so plenty to choose from.

Welcome to the Auckland Club to two orienteers who took up the special membership offer. The offer is free summer series O'ing for the rest of this season for non-members who join the Auckland club. The offer stands, of course, but the earlier you take it up the bigger the savings. We hope that those who take it up enjoy the rest of the summer series but they will also enjoy many events in the forest over the coming months.

Have an enjoyable anniversary weekend and see you next Tuesday.
