Just as well we are not big boat sailors – we might have cancelled the event based on the weather forecast but as it turned out it was more or less dry for everyone. Not the lovely day that we’d have liked you to have to see this beautiful park but still an OK day for orienteering. Dave Crofts had a day off from his big boat commitments and provided you all with some challenging courses. Thank you very much Dave for great work.
This map has some areas which are a bit harder than much of the Summer Series orienteering – you need to lift your O skills to cope with the more challenging areas. Courses 1 and 2 are designed to be hard but because of the terrain they are often not very demanding. When we get an area where we can set legs and controls that are a bit more difficult, we do. Courses 3 and 4 are never given difficult control sites or legs but we still try to create interest in the courses.
Next week we move to the event being on THURSDAY (6th of March). It is out east at Point England Reserve. From the south of the Glen Innes shopping centre head east along Pt England Rd, straight through at the round-about and then to the end of the road.
This weekend there are forest orienteering events on both Saturday (noon to 2pm starts) and Sunday (10:00 to noon starts). The first is on a map called Knobbly Kneez and the Sunday event is on Wounded Knee. These maps are side-by-side and are found near the top of the south Kaipara Peninsula. Go to Parakai and then drive 35 minutes north up the peninsula. These events are for everyone – beginners to experts (6 courses available). You may camp the Saturday night at Rob Gardens place or Mark Lawsons place. No notification needed but you might like to talk to them about it at the event. For those that went well at Pot Luck this is a chance to consolidate and for those that got lots of practice last Sunday now is the time to realise some of that new found skill. There is quite a lot of cutty grass in the area so full body cover is recommended – even for the short courses. After your run you could swim in Lake Ototoa or the hot pools at Parakai. The Macnut Café is open 10-4 each day (the macadamia nut ice-cream is wonderful).
Happy 75th birthday to Thormod Henriksen. Your orienteering family in NZ is thinking of you watching their performances from afar. We believe you are the first one to read the results that we send out well after midnight after the event. The Muren family, new members of the Auckland club, are in NZ for a while but their results are being eagerly watched by their grandfather back in Norway.
STOP PRESS. For those that ran last Sunday we have now got your split times into WINSPLITS ONLINE. This means that you can look at the results graphically. This is the way to go. Go to the Auckland O Club web page and click on the Winsplits link. Have fun looking at how you did relative to any of the others you choose. - This is a real fun part of Sportident.
