Hope you enjoyed going to the famous landmark. We had to make a change to the map, change a green circle to a green cross. But it seemed a very appropriate place to send the courses. Hope many of you spared the time to appreciate the view from the top. Thank you very much to Malcolm Stoney for the course setting for this evening. This was Malcolm’s first time at setting and from all reports his courses were enjoyed by all. He even managed to design a pleasant and interesting course 4 which is always difficult. Good to see the contours only course well used - it is an excellent way to improve your map reading skills - perhaps some of you who are newer to orienteering may like to give it a go next time we have one available.

Welcome to the newcomers. It was great to have you with us tonight. And welcome to those who are almost newcomers - we haven’t welcomed you in the last few weeks notes. It is great to see how many of you are bring friends along. We love to see new faces. Having new people trying our sport is just what we want. Well done.

The rain at lunchtime had us depressed but we were told later that the forcast was for a fine evening and that’s what we got. It was quite dry underfoot too - not yesterday though as we did some checking of control sites on the hill.

A fascinating sight was seen from the finish area later in the evening. The sheep that were in the archery field could see that the grass on the other side of the post and wire fence. How do they get the grass? Easy, they just jump up on to the stone wall, walk along until the fence is passed and then jump down. At least 10 sheep did that when I was watching - I couldn’t believe it at first but it was very deliberately done. And fairly obviously not for the first time.

Next week we start on the Thursday night orienteering. Note the next two nights are on Thursday and then we break for Christmas. Next week we are using the Blockhouse Bay map and we start from the Blockhouse Bay Reserve on Terry St. We’re unfamiliar with the area so can’t give great directions. Sorry, but watch out for the road signs pointing towards our start area. Hopefully will put a map up on our web site closer to the event so check it out if you are in doubt about where the event is.

The last of the Summer Series for the year is on the following week on the Mt Eden map starting in Taheke Reserve off Mt Eden Rd.

We left the carpark just on dusk this evening, the security car had been by and it was obviously close to the gates being locked. As we pulled away a car let us go in front and we drove towards the gate. At the sunken garden round-about we went round nearly the 360 degrees as one of our road signs was there and had to be collected. We pulled up and then found that the car behind had followed us and had now pulled up too. And so had the car behind that and the 2 cars behind them! We collected the sign and then proceeded to do another 180 degrees and head for the gate again - the tail moved into action and the cavalcade of 5 cars proceeded out of the park. In retrospect we think it was a queue of lost orienteers trying to find an unlocked gate to get out through but it did seem weird at the time!

Here is some information we have been sent about an event to which you are all invited to go. The area is fascinating and is probably somewhere you have never been. A very good day out during your Christmas holidays (or get away from the shopping frenzy).
WHO (Whangarei Orienteering Club) is having a Xmas end of year event, at Waipu Caves on Sunday 17 December 2000.
11am Mass start for a one hour score event
Followed by a picnic, a wander among the bigger caves.
Bring lunch, O gear, gumboots, a torch, a whistle.
We will use the A4 map, if you buy early, you could get one with fences :-)
Follow the brown Waipu Caves signs from Waipu/SH.1.
