Summer Series Results from Auckland Domain
March 1, 2000

Results from courses: One   Two   Three   Four

The rain didn't cool things down much. It was still very muggy. However the low cloud did have some consequences - the control collectors had a real problem finding the controls. A torch was needed to find some of the controls and even then it was difficult. Just as well we stop before daylight saving ends.

Thank you very much to Antoinette Fotherby for the setting of courses for this evening. The Domain is becoming rather familiar to many orienteers so it was good to have some different routes to follow. To those who are new to the Domain - sorry your times don't look so good but many know it very well.

Next week we are at Craigavon on a new map. The map is actually much larger than Craigavon Park and those on courses 1 & 2 will have rather challenging courses to test them. Course 1 is reported to be a good long one. This is the first of the summer series in which we won't have seen the courses before the event. We might even get a chance to have a run. Remember we change to THURSDAY. So next week the event is on Thursday the 9th of March.

Apologies to all the secondary school competitors that your results are not included. We will get them and will send them out but this may not be for few days. Your results in the next two summer series events will be included, if all goes to plan.

Nicolas Oram (a new club member) is keen to have a run at Muriwai but doesn't have any transport. Is anyone going up and could help Nicolas out? He lives in the Mt St John area but is happy to travel to where he could be picked up. Nicolas' phone number is 5229197 and he can receive messages on 5233585.

We still have the watch that was found at Mt Richmond. It is an Aquatech sports watch. We'd like to find the owner.

Guess who had a flat battery when they come to tow the campermatic home - too much listening to the cricket when they should have been selling O maps!!

Bert Chapman is setting the event this Sunday at Muriwai (Yes this Sunday - the original date given on the program has changed - due to conflict with the night relays in Taupo). (There will be sausages straight off the barbeque for sale too - being a picnic and make a day of it.) Bert has written a description of the courses and this follows:

WELCOME TO MURIWAI 2000..
SUNDAY MARCH 5TH 2000
This is a continuation of the very successful summer series held in the parks around Auckland.
Courses have been designed to accommodate all age groups from toddlers to the experienced.

Course 6……. Is for the toddlers ... a great time to start..
It consists of a string/tape strung between trees about 300 metres in length. [the course that is not the trees]
At intervals an object will be placed with a punch on it {just like the other courses] Of course parents may accompany and instruct /help as much as necessary to help their children. We may even give all who finish a lollypop...

Course 5……. This we call a WHITE course and is much the same as the park events.
It follows fences, tracks and very obvious features. If a feature is not available a tape is laid to take you to your next control. A compass is not required as you should actually see the next control.

Course 4……. Is a YELLOW course and is a little different
Like the white course it follows tracks fences etc. [we call these hand rails]
but may deviate off course a little [5 to 10 meters] to a near reentrant, knoll, depression [hey you are now learning orienteering symbols and language] or follow an obvious land feature. It's a little harder but not much. You could now take a compass if you like. Clubs have these available and do not hesitate to ask for these or for instruction as how to use them.

Course 3…….Is an ORANGE course.
It does not necessarily follow tracks etc. but deviates off into the forest/farm. Behind it should be a "catching feature" a track, fence, hill or something very prominent for you to relocate on. [this means if you over run you should be able to turn around and come back to it.] Now, a compass would of assistance.

Courses …….4/5 are RED courses and are meant for those who have experience at orienteering. These courses do not follow track/fences. etc. and do not necessarily have a catching feature behind. A compass is a requirement to ensure you are going in the right direction or to the right feature.

DO YOU KNOW ANY OTHER SPORT That offers your whole family the opportunity to take part and enjoy this wonderful country of NZ.
ALL ages can take part ... NZ had a 90 year old win a world championship this year…..
You do not have to run.. All you need to do is learn to read a map [not hard] and not panic [hey when you get into the forest and see the birds and animals who wants to panic anyhow?] It's a great family recreation. A wonderful chance to picnic with fellow NZer's and a chance to enjoy your country..
