One Tree Hill     9 March 1999

Wow, that fairly blew us away. Fancy having about 300 to a summer series event. We thought we had you lot well sussed and we ordered 250 maps, 100 more than we'd done for Carrington, our previously biggest night. You beat us, we had to grab the maps off those that had finished and give them to those about to go out. We're sorry if you were any of these people, we really did want to end our series without this happening. Thank you very much to those who gave up their map and thank you very much to those who happily received a wrinkled and sometimes well worn map.

Life in the campermatic was hectic tonight, packaging up maps and selling them to the throngs and so we didn't see much of what was happening. From the occasional excursion out it appeared that the crowded area between the registration and the start/finish area was quite happy. We hope you had an great evening and an enjoyable time using the new map. It still has some work required but it is nice having a clear map with most of it correct.

It was a pity that the night orienteering was a couple of weeks ago. Those of us who collected controls tonight got some great practice. It was so dark that one of us said hello to a passing person only to find it was a post with a notice!! Bit embarrassing huh?

Newcomers to orienteering even on the last evening of the summer series - great to see you. We will let you know, as best we can, about the program for next season as it becomes available. In the meantime if you wish to do some orienteering, look out for events, or better still contact one of the many people involved in orienteering. Those of us with contact numbers on the information sheet would be a good start. The web page is another place of contact.

On Sunday the 14th there is a forest event at Muriwai Forest, very near Muriwai Beach. This event is especially planned for Summer Series participants to come to and it is also the Secondary Schools event 3. It is in the forest which you haven't experienced in the Summer Series but it has been set with newcomers in mind. There will be coaching provided so come along and try orienteering as it is traditionally done. This map has some beautiful pine forest - you'll love it. There are 5 courses to choose from so there will be at least one to suit. You get to the map by coming to Muriwai and just after you pass the shop you turn right and then continue on until you get to the registration area. The route should be signposted from Waimauku on state highway 16 which goes to Helensville from the end of the NW motorway.

ANNOUNCING A NEW EVENT - 1st time notified. The last orienteering before the Easter 4 day event is on the Beautiful Hills map in some of the most beautiful pine forest near Auckland. This event is on Sunday the 28th March with start times from 10:00-11:30. All are welcome, especially those who have only just started orienteering during the summer series. This is also the Secondary Schools event number 4. The 5 courses are 1 (long red), 2 (short red), 3 (long orange) and this is the Secondary Schools advanced course, 4 (medium yellow) & Secondary Schools standard, 5 (short white) & Secondary Schools novice. For those new to orienteering red means for experienced orienteers (and they mean this - some of the controls will be in rather difficult native forest - it will be very difficult for those who have done only park orienteering), orange is quite taxing in that the controls are not necessarily near an obvious feature but there will be some obvious feature in the vicinity (probably similar standard to the park courses 1 & 2), yellow is like the park course 3 where there are helpful things along the way from one control to the next while the white course (like the park course 4 will have very obvious features all the way from one control to the next and sometimes the control can be seen from the previous if you look carefully in the right direction. To get to the map you take state highway 16 from the end of the NW motorway and drive through Waimauku to the Woodhill Forest Headquarters entry which will be clearly marked. Head into the forest and follow the signs, it will only be a couple of kilometres to the parking spot. (Note: for Muriwai you turn off at Waimauku while for this event you go straight on at Waimauku.) For further information contact Phil Wood on 6348104. (Phil can't be at the event unfortunately because he's off to Wellington to his mothers wedding.)

The dates of the other Secondary Schools events are 25 April and 30 May. The Nationals are in Dunedin on 17 and 18 April, 16 June for the Auckland championships and the North Island Championships in Woodhill (Auckland) on 9/10 July.

The Easter 4 day event, mentioned above, is a pre-entry event. You can get an entry form by contacting the organiser Alistair Cory-Wright (4459960), looking on the Auckland O Club web pages https://members.tripod.com/~auckoc/ , or by phoning us (the Stewarts at 5755695). Entries close on the 19th of March (9 days from now). You can enter for as many days as you wish, there is no requirement to enter for all 4 days. If you are new to orienteering choose your courses carefully using the colours as described above (you don't have to entry your age group - you just can't win a title).

Thanks for the questionnaire responses. We will process these very soon and use the information as part of our recommendations for next seasons summer series.

If you are not a club member, do think seriously about joining a club and getting a bit more involved in this wonderful sport. It is so much easier to keep in touch with what is going on, where you can get coaching, etc if you are receiving the magazines and on the club phoning lists. To join the Auckland Orienteering Club you can get the membership form from the web page or from the Stewart's (see below), the Auckland Club secretary Rob Jessop (828 4907), or the Club membership officer Vivienne Leigh (828 8232). Other club contacts are on the web page also or the events programme..

Thank you very much to Craig Wilson for setting this evenings courses and to brother Stuart who did the finishing touches after Craig left for Wellington and also assisted tonight. Craig had a challenge as he had to do most of the setting on the old version of the map, only getting the new one at the last minute. A great effort Craig.

We look forward very much to meeting up with many of the new comers to orienteering in the forest as we start expectantly into our season proper, and to those of you who can't make it to the Sunday events we do hope to see you back again at the next Summer Series, starting in November. Should you not hear about the next seasons programme to get in touch with us in spring to get a programme.

To all the club members who have attended this season, thanks for coming along and being so tolerant of the liberties that we have often taken with the courses we have set - often putting more emphasis on getting you to a great view or a lovely control site than the best course setting practices. Hopefully you will have got some good exercise out of it and will be looking forward as we are to all the events ahead.

Stewart Family (ph 575 5695; email aw.stewart@auckland.ac.nz).
