What a great night to finish this Summer Series!! I meant to print course one and maybe course two maps without fences to make it a bit more of a challenge but I forgot. So I planned a fog instead!! It was wonderful that you couldn’t see across the crater on the western side of the top. Added a further dimension to the orienteering!
I was delighted to see all the happy faces on the mountain despite the weather. I had to go near the top during the event to replace a moved control and it was great to see cheerful people. It wasn’t easy to be cheerful when the next step might land you on your rear end. Unfortunately the steep slopes are very hard to negotiate when the wet makes them so slippery. I am afraid we ended this year’s events as we began them. Someone commented tonight that we sure must have misbehaved over winter!!
Very sorry to those on course 3 who suffered from missing controls. XU somehow got shifted down a plateau or so to the same feature – those that read the map won’t have found it and XW just disappeared altogether. The paper flag was left so I hope you saw that and continued on.
Being the last of the Summer Series both the North West Club and the Auckland Club decided to have a Club get together at the event. I don’t know what happened to North West but I do know the Auckland Club shifted venue to the Sydenhams place in Remuera. I’m sure the sausages were a welcome warm up after a run in the rain.
Thank you all for your perseverance despite the weather. I do hope that some of you who haven’t tried the forest before will now try to find a free Sunday to join us all in the forest. It is much more pleasant in the rain when you are on sand under the pine trees!
The next event is this Sunday on a map at Weiti. You access this by driving north on the East Coast road and turn off to the right (on Weiti Rd) a little before you get to Silverdale. The event is a score event – you have a map with all the controls on it and you get as many as you can in an hour. There are two challenges here – firstly to sort out an efficient route and then to find the controls on your chosen route. Everyone starts at the same time in this type of event and the start time is 11am. It is, however, very strongly recommended that you arrive before 10:30 so you can get ready in time. Maps are distributed at some stage before the start, probably about 10 minutes (10:50) so it pays to be ready early to make full use of this time. There will be sausages on sale at the end – always a welcome addition.
With the change of season we will be reorganising the email lists. In the next few days we will send you an email telling you which list you are on at present (One list only get summer series mail while the other also gets the winter mail) At that stage if you wish to change you can reply to the message.
On the 24th of this month there is an event down Waiuku way. We don’t know just where but I’m sure there will be signs from the middle of Waiuku. If we get more information we’ll let you know. You can ring a club secretary or any other club member for more information if you wish. Information on other events is available on the Auckland Club website – address below. Sometimes the detail is absent so ring someone and they’ll tell you all the details.
Again, thank you all for coming to the events this summer, for your smiling faces and cheerful comments – these are the things that make the organisation of events worth while. We look forward to meeting up with you at events in the future.
