Our first night with the Secondary Schools has passed without a problem.
Our biggest night of the season with 137 times given in the results below
and we know there were lots more that haven't been recorded. Thank you
for all coming.
Lots more newcomers to orienteering - great to see you - welcome to
our summer series.
There is lots of tight competition out there - look at course one where
5 competitors were within 22 seconds of one another and further down another
4 were separated by 23 seconds. Course two also has close competition.
The Katoa Po night relays, an interclub competition, is being held near
Mt Ruapehu this weekend and many of the club members who come to the Summer
Series are competing. Good luck everyone.
The next event is on the Panmure map and first use for this map. This
event is the first Tuesday one we've had for a while so note it is on Tuesday
the 2nd of March. The registration is near the boat club off Ireland Rd
(about half way along). As this area may be new to many of you it will
be well marked. Antoinette Fotherby a very promising Auckland Club junior
had the difficult job of setting on this very interesting map. The following
week the last of the Summer Series is to be held on Tuesday the 9th of
March back at One Tree Hill on a new map. The setter is Craig Wilson, an
Auckland Club junior who is has just left for his first year at varsity,
in Wellington.
A number of our Summer Series competitors took on a much larger challenge
last weekend and ran (with some staggering also) in the Kaweka Mountain
Challenge. This is an event held in the Kaweka ranges, the highest point
in the Hawkes Bay. The courses were over 41 or 28kms and could be done
in 1 or 2 days. Tough stuff. Edwine Gers and partner did superbly well
winning the women's section on the long course over 2 days. Rob Wayne was
third in the 1 day men's event on the 28km course. A super effort saw Mark
Lawson come 6th in the long 1 day event with Alistair Cory-Wright coming
in a few places behind. Geoff Mead had a great run too coming 6th in the
vet men's long course 1 day. David Stewart, the youngest to tackle the
long 2 day pairs course was hindered by his father but still they managed
8th in the men's category (that's what you get from combining a junior
and a vet). Melissa Edwards and Rachel Smith put in a strong effort in
the long 2 day event too while Christine Rowe and partner won the mixed
section of the 28km 2 day event. Apologies if I've forgotten anyone. A
