Summer Series Results from Auckland

Results from courses: One
Two Three
Four Memory
As usual, the numbers that come to Auckland Domain were large again this year. Great to see you all there. A very special welcome to the Secondary School students it was the first night of the Secondary School competition for 2004. I suspect some of you forgot to put your schools down on the results slip. If you do so in the future I am sure we can track down your result from tonight.
It was lucky we were on Tuesday evening and not Monday morning it wouldnt have been much fun in all that rain you could see the effects of it in numerous places as you travelled around tonight.
Thank you very much to Nick Oram and Terry Nuthall for all their work in preparing this event. We really enjoyed it and it was great to have our second chance at a memory course. Did anyone trip over controls there were more out in the park than there have ever been before. And Terry got them all out in good time.
NEXT WEEK
Next week we are out east in Lloyd Elsmore Park (and the surrounding roads for courses 1 & 2). Yet another Tuesday event 10th February. Enter the park either from Pakuranga Highway or from Cascade Road. But thats not ALL next week!
NIGHT EVENTS Thursday 12th and Saturday 21st
Make very sure you have the two night events marked in red on your calendar these are not to be missed. It is the first time we have held real night events as part of the summer series. You need to bring along a good torch or headlamp so you can see where you are going, read the map and spot the controls which will have reflective tape on them (this will be a single red glow if you follow the double white glows you will be chasing sheep all over the mountain!!) A compass could be handy too much more important at night than during the day on a park. There will be 3 courses. The easiest is somewhere between the usual course 3 and 4 but being dark will be harder. Youngsters can leave at twilight (from 8.15) if they wish but younger ones should be accompanied by an adult. It does not seem to get dark until 9.00 at the moment so main starts will be from 9.00 till 10pm. Course closure 11.00pm. For the event on Saturday, 21st at Ambury you can stay on and camp in Ambury Park if you wish - $5 /adult, $2 children 5-18. You can book by phoning the ARC on .3662000, option 2. Should be a great way to spend the night.
So REMEMBER night events
THURSDAY 12th February One Tree Hill
SATURDAY 21st February Ambury Park
FOREST EVENT
The first of the Sunday forest events is on Sunday, 15th February in Woodhill forest, at the end of Rimmer Road. This event will be particularly suitable to new comers to the forest with plenty of instruction available. Pre entry is not required just turn up like you do at the Summer Series. Starts from 10:00 to 12:30pm. There will also be a string course for the littlies. The electronic timing will be out again on some but not all courses. It is a great place for a picnic so come and make a day of it.
ROGAINE
On 6/7 March 2004, the Green Coast 2004 NZ Rogaining Championships will be held at Wairamarama, near Port Waikato, Auckland South. There will be approximately 70 checkpoints spread across 160 square kilometres. Teams of between 2-5 persons will have 24 hours (with separate 16-hour and 6-hour options also available) to navigate on foot to as many checkpoints as possible. Registration for the event is now open. Info sheet and entry form available at http://auckoc.tripod.com and at each of the Summer Series events.
Mountain bike Orienteering
Sat Feb 21 Riverhead Forest, Ararimu Valley Rd. 11 am First start, 12.30 pm Last start. Course closure 3 pm. Three courses will be offered. Pre entry requested. Details on the North West orienteering website (www.geocities.com/nwocnz ) or if you have any enquiries, email Christina on ChrisR@winaggs.co.nz or call Rob Garden 09 420-2849.
Another event (but when??)
Just a friendly reminder that pre-entries for the Dune Tune close on the 10th February. Entry forms available on the website below. Two days of orienteering in the small beach-side township of Waitarere in the southern Manawatu. Featuring a mass start race for courses one and two on Saturday and the Frank Smith Interclub challenge on Sunday. The excellent Watchtower and Wanda maps are adjacent to the embargoed areas for the 2004 National Champs and provide a great training opportunity, just 2 months out from the main event. Brought to you by the minds behind the ANZ Challenge Short 2002, National Secondary Schools 2001 and Orienteering Hutt Valley. For further info see http://www.mapsport.co.nz/hvoc/dt2004.html
