BEAUTIFUL HILLS
AUCKLAND ORIENTEERING CLUB

OY1, MARCH 2000

Map Scale and climb

Welcome to the first event of the orienteer of the year series for 2000. Red course lengths and technicality are diminished in recognition of this event being the first OY, in technical terrain, and early in the year. Have fun. Complaints to Groucho Marx, Helen Clark and Heather Clendon.

Parking: Drive down the hill and turn right into Inland road for parking.

Safety: Please drive slowly and watch out for runners crossing the road. Watch out for other road users. Full body clothing is recommended for all courses except course 8. The usual orienteering hazards are present – low tree branches, slippery logs, cliffs, other runners leading you astray etc. Water is provided on courses at control sites marked on the control descriptions.

Out of Bounds: The forest to the North East of Inland Rd.

New comers: Help is available if you need it. Ask at the campomatic. If you have no or little experience in forest events then do course 8 first, followed by course 7, (at no extra charge). You can hire a compass for the day.

Event Fees: the fees listed below include a levy paid to Carter Holt Harvey for the use of their forest.

senior, club member $10, non-member $15;

students, member $5, non-member $8

family, member $25, non-member $38

Ask for a plastic bag if you want one.

Official workers at the event get a free run. (AGM 1, committee 0).

Map corrections: relevant corrections are marked on a map on a table near the campomatic. Note that some new tracks and clearings are not marked as map corrections. In general, corrections are only marked where they could significantly affect route choice or navigation (in the opinion of the setter and vetter, see reference to Heather above).

Prestart: You will be called into the prestart 6 minutes before your start time for instructions and marking your course. The prestart is 250m from the campomatic on the NW side of Restall Rd. Signposted close to the road junction.

Courses: These are according to the criteria published at the end of 1999. Write the letter "R" in the grade box on the clip card if you are running recreationally, that is, if you do not want your race time published.

Course 1: has 2 maps. You return to the start triangle control flag for a premarked second map. The control descriptions for the second map are taped to the map.

If you find no control descriptions available for your first map, please inform the setter or vetter. This tells them they underestimated the number of course 1 entries and cues them to draw up a second map for you.

Setter: John Powell; Vetter: Douglas Kwan; Coordinator: Leon McGivern
